A long day at work finished with a zany commute home and barely getting to the tournament site on time combined with a month long layoff from competitive chess is a recipe for disaster, and disaster found me quickly in this one. Fortunately I was able to trap my opponent’s queen and swindle a win.
The Modern defense is pretty quiet, but it sure can get sharp in a hurry, especially if you don’t defend accurately or with any urgency. I clearly need to be more prepared if I’m going to keep playing this opening, or I’ll continue to get eaten alive in the first 10 moves.
Escaping with a win after a longish break from chess is always good. I also still have to post the last game I played in 2009, which was a fairly nice win from the white side of the board. Stay tuned.
Too bad there was no move to completely eliminate, invalidate Bd3.
